Espresso cups, sets & more: How to design your minimalist coffee corner

Leonie Deventer || Lesezeit: 5 Minuten

Making coffee has become a little ritual for us – every morning and often a second time in the afternoon. We enjoy these moments even more since setting up a coffee corner. For some, it’s a large portafilter machine, for others a nostalgic French press, and some opt for classic filter coffee. What we all have in common, however, is that we keep our coffee corner as minimalist and clean as possible – and opt for clean lines, organic shapes, and simple but effective organization.

This guide shows you which timeless design objects can be found in our coffee corner – from the right espresso cup to matching coasters, trays, and jars, and how to organize it all so that every step becomes part of your morning routine.

The foundation of your minimalist coffee corner

Before setting up your coffee corner, you need a base. That is, a piece of furniture on which you place the machine, cups, sets, and, of course, the coffee and your accessories. For this, you can either choose a suitable spot on your kitchen counter or use a sideboard, side table, or shelf. You don’t need much space. We want to keep the coffee corner as uncluttered as possible. What is kept there follows a simple principle: only what is used daily should be visibly organized. Everything else disappears into drawers.

You need space for your machine or alternative coffee maker and for: the right espresso cups, coasters, a small tray or cutting board, and a few containers.

Espresso and cappuccino cups: what to consider when choosing

Let’s start with the right cups for espresso and cappuccino. For our designs, we were inspired by classic Italian espresso cups – demitasses. Without a handle, as they say, the experience is only truly complete: the warmth in your hands, the rising aroma, the Dolce Vita feeling.

To ensure that our espresso and cappuccino cups are lightweight, heat-resistant, and pleasantly smooth on the lips, we make them from porcelain. The high-quality material is dishwasher-safe and does not absorb odors, so your coffee enjoyment remains aromatically authentic.

Italian espresso cups – for the little Dolce Vita wake-up calls

The classic espresso cup holds between 60 and 90 ml. Volume is not the only deciding factor, but also the wall thickness: A thick-walled cup retains the temperature longer – the result is an espresso that stays warm until the last sip. Thin porcelain looks delicate but cools down faster.

Cappuccino cups – more volume, more room

Cappuccino cups usually hold between 150 and 200 ml – enough room for milk and foam. The shape should be wider and rounder than that of the espresso cup: This distributes the foam evenly and makes the cup feel balanced in the hand. Anyone who drinks filter coffee or an Americano in the morning can use the same cup.

Espresso cup set – why a set makes sense

A set of espresso and cappuccino cups ensures visual consistency. Same shape, same style, same material – this creates a clean look, especially when you have guests. For everyday use for two, a set of 2 with matching saucers is sufficient. Anyone who enjoys receiving guests is better off with larger sets. If you like it classic, you should opt for a natural, muted tone. Our cups were designed in cream white, forest green, and black for this reason. What we also really like, however, is adding accents of color – both in our coffee corner and on the set table. For this, we have expanded our collection with poppy and pastel shades such as orange, baby blue, butter yellow, and pink.

Coasters: small detail, big impact

We continue with the next important piece of our coffee corner: our coasters. These protect the surface of your coffee corner and, thanks to their organic shape and genuine leather texture, provide a high-quality, natural feel. They break with clean lines – while at the same time conveying the feeling that “everything has its place here.”

We have a set of 2 of these lying side by side in our coffee corner, to place our espresso cups with saucers on.

Small tip: Anyone who has a smaller machine or a French press in their coffee corner can choose our matching table sets. Every coffee maker looks even more elegant on them. And it looks much tidier.

Trays & Jars: organizing the coffee corner

The coffee corner should not only include the coffee machine and cups, but also all the utensils you need for preparation. Depending on the coffee machine, this includes capsules, pods, fresh beans, filters, powder – as well as sugar or syrup flavoring. To keep these perfectly organized and make everything look minimally tidy, we use our “Cloud Jars & Trays”. These are storage containers and trays in an organic shape – made from porcelain. You can sort your utensils in these and always have them at hand.

If you prefer straight lines, our cutting boards are a clean option as a base. Made from wood fiber, they come in a natural look and bring another tactile dimension to your interior game. Good to know: The boards do not absorb moisture and therefore do not get water stains or rings – unlike other conventional wooden boards.

The final touch to your coffee corner: one of our mini vases with fresh flowers. This is, of course, not a must, but it brings even more flair to your interior.

These are the questions you ask us frequently

What is the right cup size for espresso?

Classic espresso cups hold 60–90 ml. For a double espresso (Doppio), the cup should hold at least 80 ml. Larger cups cool the espresso down faster and change the ratio of coffee to volume.

What is the difference between an espresso cup and an espresso mug?

Both terms describe the same object: a small cup for espresso. “Espresso mug” is occasionally used for handleless versions, while “espresso cup” usually refers to the classic shape with a short handle. For everyday use, the difference is minor – wall thickness and material are more important.

How many cups do I need for a set?

For everyday use for two, a set of 2 is sufficient. Anyone who receives guests is more flexible with a set of 4. More than six cups are rarely needed at the same time in most households.
