Wooden kitchen utensils in the dishwasher – that sounds like a bad idea. For most wooden boards, it is: they warp, crack, and become rough. That is not sustainable – and therefore does not fit our philosophy of creating timeless interior pieces that will accompany you in your home for a long time. That is why we went in search of our cutting boards: We wanted the look of wood – but in an easy-care version. The solution: wood fiber. It sounds similar, but makes a big difference. Here we explain why regular wood is not dishwasher-safe, what makes wood fiber better – and why the board still looks like a wooden board in the kitchen.
This is why a wooden cutting board should not go in the dishwasher.
Wood is a living material. It absorbs moisture, swells, dries out again – and loses its shape and stability with every cycle. A conventional wooden board that regularly ends up in the dishwasher warps, cracks, and becomes rough. Bacteria and odors collect in these grooves, which can hardly be removed even with thorough washing.
Many wooden boards are treated with oils or waxes to protect them. The dishwasher washes away this protective layer – time after time, until nothing is left.
Wood fiber instead of wood: This is why we chose it
Our cutting board looks like wood, but is made from FSC-certified wood fibers. These are pressed with resin under high pressure – the result is an extremely dense material that differs fundamentally from real wood in one crucial way: It does not absorb moisture.
This makes it easier to care for in many ways, and you get the following benefits: dishwasher-safe: Our cutting board does not warp, crack, or swell. Stain-resistant: Beetroot, turmeric, red wine – the board does not absorb color or bleed onto other surfaces. Odor-neutral: Garlic, onions, fish – no odors cling to the material. Antibacterial: Due to its extreme density, the material does not absorb moisture and therefore does not become a breeding ground for bacteria or mold. BPA-free: Our cutting boards can come into contact with any food and are completely safe.
Hard as stone – and yet knife-friendly
That sounds like a contradiction: The material is exceptionally robust – comparable to stone. At the same time, it is gentler on knives than many common plastic boards. The reason lies in the structure of the wood fiber: It is hard enough to remain stable, but gives slightly enough not to dull the blade.
Over time, natural cut marks develop. If these bother you, they can be smoothed with our Board Butter.
A cutting board you can do more than just cut on
With our designs, we make sure they fit into everyday life. And because everyone's everyday life looks different, every design can also be used differently. That is why you can not only cut on our cutting boards, but also use them for serving or breakfast: As a serving board, we like to place it in the center of the dining table with cheese, crackers, and grapes. In the smallest size, we use it to set the table as a breakfast board. And because the surface can withstand temperatures of up to 160°C, it can also be used as a trivet for hot pans and pots.
Good to know: Rubber feet on the back keep the board securely on the worktop – so it neither slips nor leaves marks on the kitchen surface.
Timeless wooden kitchen utensils
Our cutting boards perfectly embody our clean aesthetic: Straight lines, two timeless colors, a design that effortlessly blends into any interior – from light and minimalist to dark and warm. What we also love about the material: It brings the warmth of wood and creates – if desired – contrasts with marble.
These are the questions you ask us frequently
Can the cutting board really go in the dishwasher?
Yes. The wood fiber board is completely dishwasher-safe. It does not warp or absorb moisture – that is the crucial difference from a cutting board made of real wood.
Is wood fiber worse for knives than real wood?
No. Although the material is very hard, it is gentler on knives than many plastic boards. The surface is dense enough to remain stable, but gives slightly enough not to dull the blade.
Does the dark board leave marks on light kitchen surfaces?
No. The color is in the material itself – the board is not lacquered. And thanks to the rubber feet on the back, it does not slip or cause abrasion on worktops.
