Urban Jungle: Die besten Zimmerpflanzen für minimalistische Wohnungen

Urban Jungle: The Best Houseplants for Minimalist Apartments

Leonie Deventer || Lesezeit: 3 Minuten

Houseplants have many benefits. They filter pollutants from the indoor air, improve the indoor climate, and have been proven to reduce stress. A minimalist home needs plants with clean shapes, calm leaf structures, and low maintenance requirements.

And that is exactly what we show you in this guide: urban jungle plants. You will learn which houseplants look modern and minimalist – and how to style them properly.

Which houseplants suit a minimalist interior?

Not every plant fits every interior style. For minimalist homes, plants with clean silhouettes and calm leaf structures are ideal. These are usually plants with upright growth, large individual leaves, or a sculptural shape. Heavily branched or brightly flowering plants compete with the clean look and can quickly appear cluttered.

Snake plant – easy-care, upright, sculptural

The snake plant (Sansevieria, also known as mother-in-law's tongue) is one of the best modern houseplants for minimalists. Its upright, strap-shaped leaves grow straight up and take up little floor space. The silhouette is clean and creates a calm look.

Care: Water every two to four weeks in summer, and even less frequently in winter. The snake plant handles shade and indirect light well. Waterlogging is its only real enemy.

The snake plant is one of the easiest houseplants, working almost anywhere – in the bedroom, living room, or hallway. It will also bloom for years in small pots.

ZZ plant – robust, dark green, low maintenance

The ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia, or ZZ plant) has glossy, dark green leaves with a natural elegance that suits calm, modern interiors. Its growth is slow and orderly – no sprawling in all directions.

Care: The ZZ plant stores water in its tuberous roots and can go for weeks without watering. It tolerates low light – ideal for rooms with small windows. Direct sunlight should be avoided.

If you are looking for easy-care houseplants that still make a visual statement: the ZZ plant is one of the most reliable choices.

Large houseplants as a statement

If you live minimalist, one large houseplant achieves more than many small ones. One plant, well placed, is enough as a design element – without making the room look cluttered.

Monstera deliciosa: Iconic leaf shape, broad growth. For bright rooms with space. Needs indirect light and regular, but not excessive, watering.

Ficus lyrata (fiddle-leaf fig): Large, leathery leaves, upright trunk. One of the most frequently used houseplants in design contexts. Needs a permanent location – it does not like being moved frequently.

Rubber plant (Ficus elastica): Dark, glossy leaves, upright growth, very easy to care for. One of the best modern houseplants for minimalist homes – especially the dark red variety (Ficus elastica Burgundy) makes clear accents.

Urban jungle in a minimalist home – how it works

Urban jungle does not mean filling every inch with greenery. In a minimalist home, it means: a few plants, consciously placed. One large plant in the corner. One small one on the sideboard. Rarely is more needed.

What makes the difference: All plants should be in pots that share the same design language – calm lines, understated colors. Different pots in different materials and colors make even a single plant look cluttered.

The modern cachepot: Cloud Jar by Within Mood

Our Cloud Jars – from size Medium – are suitable as cachepots for small and medium-sized houseplants. The organic, soft shape made of porcelain works well with the silhouettes of the snake plant, ZZ plant, and others: no harsh contrasts, no competition. Shapes that fit together.

The Cloud Jars are handmade in Portugal and glazed both inside and out. This makes them resistant to moisture. They are available in four sizes and five colors – White, Black, Baby Blue, and Pink. In 2025, they were awarded the German Design Award.

You can find all Cloud Jars in the Cloud Jar Collection.
